Savannah Celebrate Scouting Forever Stamp Event, July 18

Savannah Post Office and the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace to host

On July 18, the Savannah Post Office and the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace will celebrate the adventure and spirit of Girl Scouting with a special dedication of the U.S. Postal Service’s new Celebrate Scouting Forever stamp.

The stamp, issued by the Postal Service on June 9, honors the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts in the USA.  Juliette Gordon Low’s 2012 Medal of Freedom will be presented to the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace house during the ceremony.

“The Savannah Post office is proud to celebrate Girl Scouting’s role for girls for more than 100 years,” said Postmaster Denise Holguin. “Girl Scouting builds confidence and self reliance and develops tomorrow’s leaders.

The event will take place on Wednesday, July 18 at 4:15 p.m. in the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace Garden to raise awareness of this fine movement by dedicating the Celebrate Scouting stamp.”

The Celebrate Scouting Forever stamp commemorates the proud history of the Girl Scouts, the Year of the Girl in 2012, and the Girl Scouts call to action for the future, ToGetHerThere

Celebrate Scouting is the “sister” stamp to the 2010 Scouting stamp that pays tribute to Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts for the opportunities and experiences they have provided for millions of young people worldwide.

The new stamp features a large silhouette of a girl with binoculars looking into the distance.

"The Postal Service is delighted to join with the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace in the local dedication of the Celebrate Scouting stamp," said Holguin.  "The ceremony will be a fitting occasion for Richard Platt, Juliette Gordon Low’s great nephew, to present the 2012 Medal of Freedom to the Juliette Low Birthplace for exhibit in the museum."

Juliette Gordon Low was posthumously awarded the Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama at the White House, on May 29, 2012.

Richard Platt received the award on behalf of the Gordon family. The Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian award in the United States. Juliette Low was one of thirteen individuals to be given the award in 2012.
