Girl scouts in Marion
County troops 125 and 281 participate
in a special event held Saturday morning at Ocala's main Post Office. |
"You
never know what you're going to do next in the Girl Scouts," said Caitlyn
Brandt, 10, a member of troop 125.
She
held a U.S. flag as the girls led the Pledge of Allegiance at the start of the
occasion, which marked the Postal Service's release of "Celebrate
Scouting," a postage stamp commemorating 100 years of Girl Scouting in the
United States.
Although
March 12 marked the official 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts, the Postal
Service issued 40 million of the new Forever stamps Saturday to coincide with
the Girl Scouts' "Rock the Mall" celebration at the National Mall in
Washington, D.C.
Members
of the General Francis Marion Stamp Club, which coordinated the local
celebration, were especially excited about the event, said member John
Renyhart, because they had worked with the Ocala Post Office to
create a pictorial postmark to go along with the stamp.
